电镀废水中的主要污染物质均为各种金属离子，常见的有铬、铜、镍、铅、铝、金、银、镉、铁等，其实是酸类和碱类物质，如硫酸，盐酸，硝酸，磷酸和氢氧化钠，碳酸钠等到，有些电镀液还使用了颜料等到其它物质，这些物质大部分是有机物，另外，在镀件基材的预处理过程中漂洗下来的汕脂，油污，氧化铁皮，尘土也被带进了电镀废水中。
